“Music is a manifestation of the human spirit, similar to language.
Its greatest practitioners have conveyed to mankind
thingsnot possible to say in any other language.
If we do not want these things to remain dead treasures,
we must do our utmost to make the greatest
possible number of people understand their idiom."
- Zoltan Kodaly
The Nutley Music Department believes that every student should have the opportunity to explore, perform, create, and listen to music with a true understanding. These opportunities will equip our students with the musical knowledge to be life-long performers, appreciators & consumers of music.
To achieve that end, we provide every student with access to a comprehensive, balanced, and sequential program of music study. Students in preschool through grade 6 are engaged in active music making through listening, moving, singing, and playing pitched and un-pitched percussion instruments. Our elementary music curriculum employs rhythmic speech and music from world cultures to develop musical concepts and provide opportunities for students to perform and create individually and in groups. Kinesthetic and aural experiences precede the use of notational symbols, all of which provides our music students the opportunity to become creative, confident and independent thinkers both in and out of the music classroom.
In Walker Middle School our grade 7th and 8th grade students have the opportunity to continue their musical experience through participation in both vocal and instrumental ensembles. Middle School students are provided numerous performance opportunities to showcase their talents and receive valuable feedback, which in turn informs future musical learning. Students in grades 9 through 12 continue this performance-based approach with additional opportunities in even more diverse and specialized ensembles, as well as theory, composition and music history. We are also proud to offer an Academy of Fine and Performing Arts which provides students that wish to pursue the arts at the college/university level an opportunity to hone their audition & portfolio skills, perform in monthly recitals, explore career options, study historical context, and make connections between art, music and dance disciplines to better inform their individual interests.
Our goal is to provide a safe, supportive, and caring environment where students will feel free to take artistic risks and in turn achieve optimal success. Staff members in the music department offer our students a wealth of music content knowledge and strong pedagogical as well as performance experience. Our music faculty meets on a regular basis to discuss class offerings, review current trends, and explore opportunities that may benefit our students and ultimately help us to offer a current, consistent and cohesive music program for the children of Nutley.
Students participating in activities related to the music department have the opportunity to serve and support the Nutley community through our participation and performances at many town ceremonial and celebratory functions. They include but are not limited to; The annual 9/11 and Veteran’s Memorial Services, town parades, The Mayor’s Tree Lighting, performances for organizations such as The Nutley Old Guard, The Rotary Club, Unico as well various invitations to perform by local houses of worship. These performance opportunities not only help us to meet our curricular goals but they serve the Nutley community and reinforce our belief that music is a necessary component to any society, providing an avenue for expression that resonates through a wide spectrum of human emotions adding meaning, consolation and clarity when words alone cannot.
Staff members are diligent in disseminating information about content-specific activities through classroom requirements, teacher web sites, and email contact. Parents are encouraged to communicate regularly with the music staff regarding upcoming events, concerts, and student achievement. Parents are also encouraged to pursue and become acquainted with our parent booster organizations "Friends of Nutley Singers" (Choir Boosters) & "Nutley Music Boosters Association" (Instrumental Boosters). These two non-profit organizations provide our students with much needed additional resources and are a crucial component of our success, please get involved!
