One of the main colonial arguments for independence was the topic of actual versus virtual representation. A faction of the colonists argued that the colonies were only represented in Parliament virtually and would settle for nothing less than having actual representation. Note: the concept of "virtual representation" was the idea that every member of Parliament represented every member of the empire. Since Parliament pre-dated the rise of large cities, and did not bother to redistrict itself, the members therefore felt that representing Birmingham was no different than representing Pennsylvania or New Jersey.
Now move forward 230 years into present day America. Look at how current Americans are represented. Please write an essay about modern American representation. Are you represented virtually or actually in 21st century America? Take into consideration population, geography, and even economics and technology to make you point. Do NOT take both positions!!! You must take one position only.
Two pages, single spaced, is fine for this essay. Be certain to cite where necessary. Use Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
