Julie Glazer
Superintendent

Dr. Julie Glazer joined the Nutley Public Schools as Superintendent in July 2016.

 

Previously, Dr. Glazer was the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction PK-12 in the Summit, New Jersey Public Schools since 2008.  In this role, she was responsible for direct supervision of all content areas supervisors, the Supervisor of Technology, the Supervisor of World Language, ESL and Bilingual Services, eight Basic Skills Teachers, three Instructional Facilitators, two PK-5 Literacy Coaches, and the PK-5 enrichment teacher. She also collaborates with twelve Principals and Assistant Principals to ensure consistency of operations, programs, budget, and policy.

 

In addition, Dr. Glazer co-chaired the Education Committee of the Board of Education and oversaw the District Professional Learning Committee, including the development of the Professional Learning Plan, which has been recognized as a model for Union County and the State of New Jersey. She was also the district’s testing coordinator, providing oversight and analysis of student achievement.

 

Initiatives developed under Dr. Glazer’s tenure include STEAM and Science Research, Mandarin grades 6-12, Media Literacy, the Reading and Writing Workshop model, K-8, Problem-Based Learning, and a number of programs designed to eliminate achievement gaps such as the Summer Needs Assessment Program, Summer Academy, S-Cubed, the Basic Skills Extended Day Program, and expanded services for ELL students.   She has actively worked with the Summit Education Foundation to develop many of these programs as well as the 1:1 technology initiative in grades 5-12, family math, science, and technology programming, and the implementation of daily job-embedded coaching as professional learning for staff.

 

Dr. Glazer has been named by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Technology as a Future Ready District Leader and was honored at the White House for her leadership and commitment to digital learning.

 

Prior to joining Summit, Dr. Glazer was in Orange, New Jersey for four years and served as the Supervisor of Instruction and Professional Learning PK-12.  There, she collaborated with the administration to implement instruction and professional learning for more than 650 staff members. Exemplary initiatives included the implementation of small learning communities grades 6-12, block scheduling grades 9-12, curriculum mapping K-12, led the district in piloting the professional learning communities model, and the implementation of a data collection system using a protocol to identify levels of student engagement, curriculum alignment, and rigor. In her education career she has also served as a School Instructional Facilitator, teacher of departmentalized Language Arts, and a classroom teacher. 

 

Dr. Glazer became a National Board Certified Teacher in 2004. National Board Certification is a rigorous, peer-reviewed process that defines and measure teaching excellence and ensures that Board-certified teachers have proven skills to advance student achievement. Less than 1% of teachers nationally have earned this recognition, and Dr. Glazer is one of only 250 NBC teachers in New Jersey.

 

Before her career in education Dr. Glazer was the President of Mittman Productions specializing in documentary, educational, and public service programming for the non-profit community. Clients included the Chicago Board of Education, National PTA, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago, and the Chicago Initiative/Gallery 37.

 

Dr. Glazer received her BA in Journalism as well as a Certificate of Public Affairs/Public Administration from Indiana University; her MA of Fine Arts (with honors) from Columbia College, Chicago, Illinois; MA in Education (Suma Cum Laude) from  DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois, and her Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Magna Cum Laude) from Saint Peter’s College, New Jersey.

 

She is an executive board member of Learning Forward, New Jersey, and is a frequent speaker and presenter on topics of professional learning, leadership, and the change process.
