Elephants

Elephants are the largest animals besides some kinds of whales. It is the second tallest animal. The only taller animal is the giraffe. There are two kinds of elephants, African elephants and Indian elephants also known as Asian elephants. African elephants live only in Africa south of the Sahara and they are the biggest the elephants. Indian elephants live in parts of India and Southeast Asia.

They have very large ears and a long nose called a trunk. They use their trunk for many things. With their long trunk they can reach up to 23 feet. They are able to tear down trees and are very good fighters. Elephants have long sharp tusks that they use for many things. The longest tusk ever recorded weighed 214 pounds and was 138 inches long. You can tell how old an elephant is by its tusks. Tusks differ in size, shape and direction it points out to. The elephants’ only predators are people who kill them for their ivory tusks so they can sell them and get rich.

 

Elephants are extremely strong and eat 5% of their body weight every day. That is about a couple of hundred pounds. It is all vegetation.

 

Elephants can live in nearly any place in the world if there is a good amount of vegetation and water. They must have enough room to move around. Elephants spend 16 hours a day eating. They also drink 30 to 50 gallons of water a day to go along with the food. They are very unique.
