Commissioner of Public Works

Peter Scarpelli

"I wanted to serve the community"

Peter Scarpelli has lived in Nutley all his life. He went through Lincoln Elementary School, Nutley Junior High and Nutley High School. Later he attended Davis & Elkin and Rutgers University. At one time he owned a landscaping business in town. His children and grandchildren live in Nutley too.

Mayor Scarpelli ran in 1983 for the Board of Commissioners in Nutley. He chose to be Commissioner of Public Works when he was elected and has been a part of that department ever since. He told us “Nutley has the finest Public Works Department in NJ.”

Mr. Scarpelli received the most votes in the 2000-2004 election so he has the honor of being Nutley’s mayor. He likes being mayor and said “it’s fun.”

There are about sixty dedicated workers in The Public Works Department. This department takes care of the road repairs, the salting and snow removal for the winter, taking reports from the civil engineer, recycling, sign making, unclogging sewers, replacing fire hydrants and more. There are thirty trucks that this department uses to get their jobs done.

Under Mayor Scarpelli Nutley is getting more serious about recycling, in spring of 2004 we will expand curbside recycling to include tin cans, junk mail, and magazines. This is a cost saving measure. The town gets money for what is turned into the recycling center and we save money by decreasing the weight of the garbage pick up. Citizens put out ten to twenty tons of recycling every week and it is sorted at the Public Works Department.Recycling benefits Nutley in MONEY ways!

Mr. Scarpelli is in the middle of one of the most important tasks as mayor, upgrading Nutley’s center. The day we visited his office this project was starting and he showed us the planning boards. The sidewalks will be redone and the center will have a new look with planters and flowers.

Mayor Scarpelli is proud of many of the events that bring Nutley citizens together and he has continued to help these events grow. In the summer we have Swing Night which is like a big block party in the center of town. We also have Family Day when no sports activities are scheduled and no homework is given. “Family Day gives everyone time to spend with their family.”Mr. Scarpelli said.

The accomplishments of this department under Mayor Scarpelli make Nutley a place to enjoy. A happy community not only brings the people together but their ideas and they will always be looking for new ways to unite our town.
Fact: Depending on the seriousness of the storms in the winter, snow removal costs about $50,000 to $100,000 a year.
