Flourishing flowers, numerous nut trees blowing in the sweet, warm breeze, and birds singing above you -you can imagine! Nutley, New Jersey, located in Essex County just north of Newark, is a treasure chest just waiting to be discovered. Nutley has a rich history with known and unknown heroes and old stories just waiting to be told. Settled in pre-Revolutionary War times, Swedish, Dutch, English, Italian, Irish, and other immigrants have made Nutley their home. Originally a farming community, our little town has been home to textile mills, stone quarries, and factories. These workers came and stayed. Generations later, some of those family's ancestors are still in town. Nutley is a place that children grow up in and then stay to raise their family.

Originally our town was named Franklinville until it was changed to Franklin and then to the name of Nutley in 1902. The name may have been chosen because of all the nut trees that lined the streets and sidewalks. Many famous people came to enjoy weekends here. Authors, and artists built their homes and stayed or visited from nearby New York.

Nutley is a town that is rich in history. We had fun researching Nutley, learning some history, and discovering the signigicance of our many local memorials.

Excerpts from this 1957 poem “I Love to Live in Nutley” by Countess Dorothea de St. Clement expresses the sentiment best.

“ I love this dear suburban town,
Where streets are shaded up and down:
Avenues cross to a park-or brook,-

“Calico Lane” and “Nanny Goat Hill,”
Living memories surround them still.

I love to live with home-spun folks
Who tell their sorrows and tell their jokes,

You tell them how you think and pray
In a warm understanding intimate way.
Here is inward peace and neighborly love,
With God below, all around and above.
The moon-man smiles and the stars look down
On the friendly people of Nutley town.
I love to live in Nutley.”
