Mount Rushmore Mount Rushmore is located 23 miles southwest of Rapid City, South Dakota. The mountain was named after Charles E. Rushmore, a New York lawyer. The idea of doing this project was to get more tourists to visit South Dakota. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum went to the Black Hills region to make sure that the carving could be done and he decided Mount Rushmore would be the best place for this project. The 4 faces of American Presidents stand about 5,500 feet above sea level. About each head is a tall as a six story building. The names of the 4 Presidents sculpted into the mountain are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The mountain was carved from 1927 to 1941. (It took 14 years!) The memorial covers 1,278 acres. It represents 150 years of the history of the United States. Info typed by: Danielle
