PTO Events 2007/2008

Some of you may not be familiar with the various events sponsored by the PTO each year. The following is a list of those events and the dates they are scheduled.
  • Welcome Back Dance- September 28, 2007
We provide a DJ that entertains the kids with organized music games like the Macarena, Electric Slide, Cha Cha slide, Y.M.C.A and other popular songs. Just be aware (especially with the younger grades) the gym can be crowded with parents and kids and the music is loud. We ask Class Parents to bring in a treat and we provide juice and water. Of course, we ask parents (especially dads) to help chaperone. Like last year, we will hold three separate sessions: the first group will be grades K to 2 and will take place 5:30PM to 6:30 PM, Grades 3 &4 will attend the dance from 6:45PM to 8:00PM and the grades 5&6 will attend from 8:15PM to 9:30PM to avoid overcrowding in the gym.
  • Picture Day- October 2, 2007
This is self explanatory. The children leave home dressed nicely for their picture, by the time the photographer takes your child's picture his hair will be a mess, her shirt will be wrinkled and anyone unlucky enough to be assigned an afternoon slot will be wearing their lunch. We need parents to help line the kids up, try to comb their hair and smooth out the wrinkles.
  • Pumpkin Patch- October 19, 2007
The PTO arranges for 600 pumpkins to be delivered to school (Enough for each child and the teachers.) Weather permitting, the PTO volunteers decorate the south playground with Halloween decorations, set out treats sent in by class parents and the children go into the "pumpkin patch" to pick their little pumpkins. This event takes place in the afternoon. The morning kindergarten classes have their "pumpkin patch" in Mrs. Adubato's classroom. The class parents decorate the kindergarten classroom when the children are out of the room for a special. The morning kindergarten class parents arrange for each class to have treats. The other class parents send in treats that are offered to all the students for the afternoon festivities. The students always enjoy brownies, cookies, dunkin munchkins and rice krispie treats. No candy please. The PTO supplies cider and water.
  • Holiday Boutique- December 7, 2007
This event is held on a Friday in the gym. NO LUNCH PROGRAM will be offered on this day. Tables bearing a large assortment of merchandise priced from $.25 to $10.00 are set out so that the children can do their holiday shopping. We need a lot of patient parents to assist the children with their shopping. This is no easy task especially when children show up with a dollar and want to buy something for every person in their family. We also need parents to help set up the night before. We make some of the items that we sell, but we buy most of the items from various sources such as catalogues, dollar stores, etc. **This is not a fundraiser**The PTO doesn't look to make a profit on the sale; we just try to break even.
  • Holiday Pizza Party - December 21, 2007
The PTO supplies a pizza lunch that is eaten in each of the classrooms for every class on the half day of school before the Holiday break. The pizzas are delivered to the school from the local pizzerias to a central location in the school. Class parents/other volunteers pick up their pizzas and serve them to the class. Drinks and desserts/snacks are arranged by each class parent.
  • Curiosity Shop- Thursdays and Fridays in March
Grades 1 to 6 are offered a variety of courses that take place after school. We need many volunteers to teach, to assist and help organize. The kids really like this program. Examples of classes offered include: candy making, origami, crafts, story telling, and gardening. Students sign up for four one hour classes. Space is limited so the best way to make sure your child gets the class that she wants is to volunteer to help. Children of volunteers get to register first.
  • Book Fair- March 4th, 5th and 6th, 2008
A variety of age appropriate books are on sale in the hallway of the first floor. The first night is open to parents and children, over the next two days the children "shop" with their classes at appointed times. Children bring in their own money and the PTO provides each child a $5.00 gift certificate to purchase books.
  • Staff Appreciation Day- May 9, 2008
As a token of thanks for all they do, the PTO treats the staff of Yantacaw to a catered lunch. Parents are asked to send in desserts.
  • Plant Sale- May 9, 2008
A committee arranges with a local nursery to provide a variety of flowering plants from impatiens to begonias, vegetables and herbs are arranged in the gym. The children come down to the gym with their classes to shop for their plants. There will be NO LUNCH PROGRAM on this day. We need help the day before unloading the plant truck and setting up the gym. We also need parents to help with the actual sale. If your child intends on purchasing plants it is helpful to send them in with bags or boxes so they can carry their purchases.
  • Junior Olympics- May 15, 2008
This is a town wide event held at Tangorra Field (the Nutley High School Oval). All fourth, fifth and sixth grade students from all five elementary schools walk to the center of town. Select fifth and sixth grade students participate in a variety of "Olympic Track and Field" events to win medals while their classmates cheer them on. The PTO supplies ALL 4th, 5th and 6th grade students with a T-shirt. Look for the order forms and make sure your child fills in their correct size. The children return to school for a PTO sponsored pizza party. Class parents must be present or arrange for another parent to take their place to supervise the class party. The teachers do not stay in the classroom for the pizza party.
  • 4th Annual Family Picnic- June 7, 2008
Held on a Saturday, from 4PM to 8PM, this all-you-can-eat family picnic is catered by Baskingers. We have a D.J. that plays games such as egg toss, mummy wrap, tug-of-war, and water balloon fun to name a few. Last year our picnic was at Kingsland Park. This year we are already hoping for no rain!!!!
  • Kindergarten and 6th Grade Promotions - June, 2008
After the promotion ceremony the PTO provides light refreshments for the students and family members.
  • Events throughout the year -
    • Assemblies - The PTO also provides 3-4 assemblies throughout the year for all grades. Our committee chooses them with a "learning" theme, but also fun for the children and teachers.
    • Birthday Books - We give each child in the school a book during the month of their birthday. A monthly group picture is taken and is displayed on the wall outside the office
If you have any questions or are interesting in helping with any of these events, please contact Lori DiAntonio (973-661-0833) Maria Geltrude (973-661-1636)
