Introduction

This amazing city has survived the tests of time for, supposedly, centuries.  Located in the mountains of Jordan, more specifically on the slope of Mount Hor, it was only recently discovered in 1812 by Swiss explorer, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.  It is nicknamed the “rose-red city half as old as time” for the marvelous color of the stone the city is cut from.

Although cut into the side of a mountain, the city certainly wasn’t primitive.  It had its own manmade oasis due to cisterns and dams built to harness floods.  This technique of using the environment to their advantage was also put to use with the city’s eastern entrance, which led you through a narrow gorge that opened up to the treasury.  A bit further off from the treasury lies an amphitheatre, cut into the very hillside and even some tombs.  From this amphitheatre, you have the best view of the city.
