Mrs. Rosemary Clerico
Principal
It is hard to believe the school year has ended. It has been a challenging year with construction at Spring Garden School. From a hole in the ground the new gymnasium emerged. The finishing touches are being put on the gymnasium and it will be ready for the students in September. Work will be completed this summer on the heating and ventilation system as well as the windows. Some of the windows have already been replaced. Much growth has taken place at Spring Garden School.
The students have done an outstanding job both academically and socially. I was most impressed to observe their enthusiasm and dedication towards character building activities held by the student council and military fan mail clubs. They excelled in such projects as fundraising for Haiti, food drives, and collecting holiday gifts for those less fortunate.
Our Character Education Program has continued throughout the year. Each month we chose a pillar of good character to highlight. In order to motivate our students we began a “ticket” program. If a child was seen exhibiting good character, the child was given a ticket and he or she’s name was read over the PA system. At the end of the month five names were drawn from the jar of tickets and the students were announced at an assembly and they received a certificate and dog tag of one of the pillars. I am very proud of the staff and students for participating in such a wonderful, rewarding program. For the 2010- 2011 school year the staff has planned to formulate a peer mediation program, “Peace Makers,” to be utilized during the school day, particularly at lunchtime. Now we look forward to summer.
Summer is a great time for family fun and play. It is also the time when some of the educational gains children make during the school year can slip away. To help you keep this from happening here are a few strategies. Visit the Nutley Public Library. It is free and has rewards and programs to encourage your young readers all summer. Be sure to review the summer reading lists posted on the District Web Page. Be sure to click on the grade level your child will be in next school year and remember Study Island will be available throughout the summer for students in grades three through six. Please take advantage of this wonderful program as it offers practice in the area of math, reading and writing. Also, play games with the students as you take road trips. Have them practice mental math whenever possible.
We need to be true partners to make sure your student/s succeed in school. As always, we all are deeply honored that you entrusted your children to us this past year! On behalf of the Spring Garden School teachers and staff I wish you all a happy safe summer. See you in September.
Have a Great Summer,
Mrs. Clerico
