The Nutley High School CORE team (Community Outreach Representatives for Education) is winding down as the school year ends and gearing up for 2017-2018.
This year, as part of the new program, School Counselor Meredith Gerckens and Student Assistance Coordinator Lisa Cassilli spearheaded a group of students who become the school’s ambassadors. Each of the CORE members were paired with a NHS student who was new to the district. CORE students were encouraged to help their counterparts adapt to a new high school, make friends and become engaged in the school community and its events.
Moving forward to the 2017-2018 school year, CORE students will work to support all incoming freshmen at orientation in late August and, once again, meet students new to Nutley during summer enrollment.
“The group was established to foster inclusion of students new to the building,” said Mrs. Cassilli. Students took the lead in reaching out to their counterparts, informing them of school events and often making sure they had friends to attend games, concerts and other functions with.
“I’m proud of our CORE students,” said Mrs. Gerckens.” “They took their roles seriously and showed great initiative.”
Sometimes you need nothing more than a friendly face in the hallways and that’s what the CORE students can offer others.
