At last night’s Board of Education meeting, the Board appointed staff members to three key District administration roles. Ms. Tracy Egan was appointed to the new district role of Director of Student Support and Interventions. Mr. Joseph Materia was appointed Principal of John H. Walker Middle School. Mr. Michael Rovetto was appointed Vice Principal of Nutley High School.

In this new Central Office role, Ms. Egan will provide leadership in the development and operations of the Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) process in all of the district's buildings. Ms. Egan will oversee the Strategies teachers, and work hand-in-hand with the building principals to ensure a consistent approach to this process. She will coordinate 504 accommodations throughout the district and will also oversee the district’s Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying prevention and response process.  Ms. Egan’s new role is effective July 1st, after serving as Principal of John H. Walker Middle School since 2013. She joined the district in 2000 as a middle school English teacher and, in 2010, was named Vice Principal of John H. Walker Middle School. Ms. Egan began her career in education in 1996 as a middle school Basic Skills teacher in Bergenfield. Ms. Egan has a BS from Marist College and a MA from St. Peter’s College.

Mr. Materia will succeed Ms. Egan as Principal of John H. Walker Middle School on July 1st. Mr. Materia joined the district in 2012 as the Coordinator of the World Language and ESL Programs and, since 2016, has served as Vice Principal of Nutley High School. Prior to coming to the Nutley Public Schools, Mr. Materia was the K-12 Supervisor of World Languages/ESL/Music in the Jefferson Public Schools. He began his career in education as a teacher of Italian, first at the East Mountain Day School at the Carrier Clinic and then, for seven years, at Dumont High School. He also served, for seven years, as an adjunct professor of Italian at Montclair State University. He holds his BA and MA from Montclair State University.

Mr. Michael Rovetto was appointed Vice Principal of Nutley High School. He comes to this role from an in-district teaching position. He began in Nutley as a leave replacement teacher in the middle school in 2014. He then went to the high school to teach as a special education teacher for two years before returning to the middle school. He has taught at John H. Walker Middle School ever since.  Mr. Rovetto started his career teaching in the Cranford Public Schools. He holds his BA and MA from Montclair State University. Mr. Rovetto will replace Mr. Craig Jandoli in late July.

“We are fortunate, in Nutley, to have talented staff members eager and excited to take on new challenges and roles within the district,” said Mr. Kent Bania, Superintendent of Schools. “As Director of Student Support and Interventions, Ms. Egan will take on an integral role within the district, streamlining and examining our I&RS process. Mr. Materia has proven himself a valuable, trustworthy and dedicated building leader and I am thrilled to have him take over the reigns at the middle school. And Mr. Rovetto, a longtime teacher, will be a great addition to the NHS team later this summer. I am already excited for what the future holds.”
