Dear Nutley Families,

Each year, thousands of schools and youth organizations nationwide participate in "Start With Hello Week," a national call-to-action week dedicated to making new social connections and creating a sense of belonging among youth. If you care deeply about children, you may know social isolation is a very real epidemic. It can cause kids to pull away and, in serious situations, even hurt themselves or others.

Social isolation is the overwhelming feeling of being left out, lonely or treated like you are invisible. Young people who are isolated can become victims of bullying, violence and depression. As a result, many further pull away from society, struggle with learning and social development, or choose to hurt themselves or others.

We can change this!

Start With Hello Week is this September 15 – 19, 2025. Start With Hello brings attention to the growing epidemic of social isolation and empowers young people to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their school, youth organization, and community. Start With Hello is one of Sandy Hook Promise’s no-cost Know the Signs programs and teaches students to be more socially inclusive and connected to each other. With activities and curricula available for all ages, students are empowered to end social isolation in three easy steps.

  1. See Someone Alone: Learn how to recognize the signs of loneliness and social isolation.

  2. Reach out and Help: Find out what you can do to help others feel included.

  3. Start with Hello: Discover how to break the ice and strike up a conversation.

Nutley High School is proud to participate in Start With Hello Week, a national call-to-action week dedicated to making new social connections and creating a sense of belonging among youth. Our school will celebrate Start with Hello week with a school-wide assembly on mental health awareness and suicide prevention on Thursday, September 18th. We also will be hosting our NHS Club Fair on Friday, September 19th–an opportunity for students to get involved and meet new people!   Our goal is to create a culture of kindness and belonging for all our Nutley Raiders!

Your involvement is vital in helping us maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all students. We believe by working together, we can ensure that our school remains a place where every child feels secure and supported.

Thank you,

NHS Administrative Team and CORE Ambassadors
